Hello! My name is Ioan Tadhg Jones and I'm a North Wales based artist-printmaker and photographer. Growing up in rural Wales gave me an early interest and appreciation for landscape and nature, finding inspiration in the various ruins strewn about the family farm. During my sixth form studies I started seriously considering a career within the arts, and started establishing my own style and personality through my work. At this time, I was also studying English Literature, which influenced much of my practice through my creation of work inspired by poetry and music, and the visuals I would create in my head. Although I specialise in printmaking and photography, I am also interested in sculpture and installation as they allow a less restricted creating process and offer a more hands-on experience that I enjoy given my background in design.
I find Printmaking to be the perfect balance between hands-on creation and expressive image-making. As a medium, it’s very forgiving to my bold and expressive drawing, both in multi-colour and monotone styles. The small imperfections work to enhance my working methods, and I enjoy the risks and unpredictable aspects of each printing medium. Though my interest is mainly in relief printing and lithography, I am keen to build upon my existing knowledge and learn new methods as I progress.
I’ve been doing some form of photography since childhood and have always enjoyed capturing life as it is. I have a collection of over 50 cameras, both digital and analogue. This collection is founded from both my interests in photography and conservation, with my oldest film camera being from the 1920s, and my earliest digital camera being from 1999. I began really developing my photography practice during the pandemic as a way to keep creative, using the farm and surrounding landscapes as my sole influence across all my art. Following this period, I continued my landscape photography but developed an interest in what I would call ‘quiet portraiture’. Capturing quiet moments of life while remaining an absent spectator. Capturing a moment just as I see it in the moment. My photography stands as an integral part of my work across any discipline as I often use it as reference or inspiration.
